Open Government Partnership Summit 2013 Follow-Up

November 7, 2013
by Jacque Porte

Last week’s gathering of over 60 countries resulted in many voluntary commitments to increased political transparency, freedom of information, civic participation, whistleblower protection, and corporate accountability.

British prime minister David Cameron opened the event with a pledge that the UK would crack down on hidden company ownership – a move widely celebrated by transparency, anti-corruption and tax justice campaigners. Cameron also emphasized the role of open government in economic growth and innovation.

The prime minister’s words reflect a larger trend towards open government discourse, a phrase which has come to refer as much to transparency and accountability as it has to the new technologies that encourage citizen engagement and allow easier access to information. The Open Government Partnership Summit presented the opportunity for countries to frankly and openly discuss the goals and challenges of government transparency in an extra-national context.
