Those Leagues and Leagues of Municipalities: Working Towards a Better Government

November 21, 2013
by Jacque Porte

This week’s New Jersey State League of Municipalities (NJLM) convention moves our spotlight to focus on the conventions that have been helping local municipalities find a voice in state and federal government. The NJLM, for instance, allows cities and towns in the Garden State a space to discuss legislation affecting their citizens, ethics and sustainability, environmental protection, transportation, and transparency.

This year’s NJLM convention will focus on general topics as well as the specifics of recovery from Sandy and preparations for the next natural disaster. The event also features a Mayors’ luncheon and a Women in Government breakfast, providing an opportunity for people facing similar challenges to collaborate to identify solutions. If you’ll be attending New Jersey’s events, Darryl Isherwood of NJ.com has compiled a list of the Five Must-Attend Parties at the convention.

Florida’s League of Cities (FLC) also focuses on presenting a unified voice for the state’s municipal governments. The League works to serve the needs of Florida’s cities and promote local self-government. Florida’s Sunshine Law guarantees that the public has access to the public records of government bodies, and as a result the findings and discussions of the events are helpfully published to the League’s website (though I am sure Floridians would certainly appreciate live-streaming of their meetings). The FLC meets more often than the NJ conference, hosting a range of events from legislative conferences to training seminars throughout the year, and recently gathered for a Research Symposium focusing on new developments in municipal finance.

Coming up in early December, the FLC will meet for their Summit Series to discuss the purpose of cities and the proper function of government. Presenters will call upon attendees to discuss how to renew confidence and provide clarity in their municipalities, much like last month’s Open Government Partnership in London. Certainly seems like they’d benefit from an intelligent meeting management system that allows them to organize and publish their agendas, as well as helps them to live-stream their meetings to the public. Wonder where they could find such a spectacular tool!

There is certainly no shortage of the groups across the country. The North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) advocates for municipalities at the state and federal level, provides a forum for the exchange of ideas among municipal officials, promotes excellence and efficiency in municipal government, and provides services and information that will help municipal officials meet the needs of their citizens. The League of California Cities (LCC) is an association of California city officials who work together to enhance their knowledge and skills, exchange information, and combine resources so that they may influence policy decisions that affect cities. And of course, there’s the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, and the Maine Municipal Association, just to name a few more.

All of these organizations work tirelessly to unite cities, villages, and towns across the state in order to identify ways to better serve their citizens. It’s a truly admirable task, and these conventions have helped municipalities overcome many challenges and realize numerous accomplishments, both locally and at the federal level. The only thing these groups might be missing is a complete meeting management solution, and we at IQM2 are ready to help them move into a future of transparency and citizen engagement.
