Eight Advancements in Local Government to Be Thankful for This Thanksgiving

November 26, 2013
by Jacque Porte

Many local governments and schools have given their communities a lot to be thankful for over the past few years. Let’s see how certain features and advancements have helped municipalities foster citizen engagement and improve transparency.

  • Live-streaming media: Over the past ten years, governments have been shifting towards publishing recordings of meetings on the web, and even more recently have been making this media available for live-streaming so that citizens can watch meetings in real time from their homes, offices, and even while traveling.
  • Templates: Thank goodness for templates! They make unbearable, repetitive work disappear and give staff more time to respond to citizens.
  • Paperless meetings: Meeting organizers have eliminated several tons worth of paper and saved countless hours of printing time by making their agendas and minutes available in paperless formats. Board members and citizens can now access important documents right from their laptops, iPads, or tablets.
  • Transparency initiatives: Collaborations between municipalities have led to promises (and successes) in achieving even greater transparency, and legislation like Florida’s Sunshine Law makes complete citizen engagement even more of a reality.
  • Document tracking and streamlined workflow: Important initiatives are no longer lost in the shuffle, and automated workflows ensure every approval is received before an item is placed on an agenda.
  • Item numbering: Clerks have spent enough time numbering and renumbering items, and now they let their software do the work, allowing them more time for what’s really important: some face-to-face with actual citizens!
  • Searchable agendas and minutes: Document request forms have disappeared overnight, thanks to a storehouse of agendas and minutes, dating back to the municipality’s very first meeting and all searchable through their web portal.
  • Comments and Stickies for Agenda Items: Citizens can now comment publicly or privately on specific agenda items through their city’s web portal.
