Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Day of Service

January 20, 2014
by Jacque Porte

Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace; a soul generated by love.
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in "The Drum Major Instinct" on February 4, 1968

These are not Martin Luther King, Jr.’s most famous words, but they resonate with those in the public sector. King recognized the ability and even the responsibility of each citizen to participate in his community, through community service as well as through citizen engagement, in order to achieve common goals and improve the lives of all. He identified the potential in every human being to create positive change, and municipalities across the country are daily giving their citizens the ability to voice their concerns through public meetings and to consider the effects of legislation through transparency.

So give yourselves a hand, whether you are a municipal employee working to bring the information to the community, or a citizen providing your perspective on a new resolution, because you are supporting that same spirit of cooperation and service King fought for--the spirit that makes our country great.
