How well does your organization foster citizen engagement?

Is your organization fostering public participation? That’s the question that the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) asks in its Civic Engagement Organizational Assessment. The assessment is a two-page document that helps organizations identify whether they are providing enough information to interested members of the public, and whether they are effectively encouraging civic participation.

The questions range from a focus on the capability of local officials and employees to work productively with citizens to ensuring a formal procedure exists to facilitate further reflection and discussion. The assessment also includes open-ended questions to help leaders identify goals and weaknesses.

Fortunately for those who detect a need for improvement, there are several resources available. ICMA will happily provide tips through their practice leaders, and can be reached via e-mail. IQM2 can also provide assistance through their MinuteTraq and MediaTraq software, which will help you make documentation and live-streaming media available--and most importantly searchable--to citizens and employees.
