New Mexico Webcasting Legislation receives committee approval

February 10, 2014 - The New Mexico House Appropriations and Finance Committee has recommended approval of two House resolutions that would require archival of committee and floor sessions of the House and Senate during legislative sessions. House Concurrent Resolution 1 would webcast all interim committee meeting hearings and House Resolution 2 would archive video and audio from House committee meetings during the legislative sessions. The bills must be recommended by additional committees before they are voted on by the House, where they will require two-thirds vote of the members. Read more

Sen. Hoylman calls for Transparency in the Port Authority

February 10, 2014 - Sen. Brad Hoylman (New York) will introduce legislation that requires the Port Authority to comply with New York state’s Freedom of Information Law. The move is undoubtedly inspired by Gov. Christie’s “Bridgegate” scandal. Hoylman points out that the Port Authority has its own policy but that it is less binding and easier to circumvent than the public disclosure laws of New York and New Jersey. Read more

Sen. Shiozawa sponsors USTAR legislation

February 7, 2014 - Sen. Brian Shiozawa (Utah) is sponsoring legislation that seeks to ensure transparency in the Utah Science Technology and Research (USTAR) Initiative, which is a technology-based economic development initiative funded by the state. USTAR was created in March 2006 with the passing of Senate Bill 75. Shiozawa felt impelled to sponsor the legislation after a legislative audit discovered that the organization was overstating the commercial benefits of some scientific research to the state.
